Garage Door Repair/Wienfest

 October 29, 2017

I went to the 8:30 a.m. mass on a fresh, sunny day.  When I got home, the garage door opened only about 8 inches, then closed.  I noticed a cable hanging from the top or the door.  I parked, went through the front door and investigated from the inside.  The door didn't open and I noticed a cable hanging from the inside on the opposite side.  I looked up the garage door repair I had previously and planned on calling them on Monday.

I fixed a two-egg omelet with cheese, blackberries and coffee (no toast), read the paper, watched TV, did a little knitting until it was time to leave for Weinfest.  I took my brandy apple spice cake to the car, got in, no keys!  By checking the garage door, I was distracted and didn't attach the keys to my purse; I was locked out.  I managed to pull the garage door up enough for me to crawl under and get in the house for my keys.  It was a tight squeeze, but I managed.

I got to the Schwabenhof with my dessert.  Peter was there and upset that the doors didn't open, but the side door was open for members to set up the hall.  I cut my dessert; one of the ladies thought the pieces were too small, so I made a bigger portion on each plate.  Most of the desserts were fancier, and they went like hotcakes.  Mine was not a big taker.  I'll have to make something more appealing next time; although this dessert was very delicious, if anyone had tried it.

We had a nice chorus and a very nice program.  Peter took Tony home, who will be 94 next Tuesday.

Deer Run Lodge

 Thursday, September 28, 2017

We started out at 9:15 a.m. heading for St. Germain. Cool sunny day, about 60 degrees,  but should warm up.  Peter drove almost the entire way without a stop.  Took a rest stop at Lake Tomahawk, then proceeded to our destination.   I always hold my breath when I'm not sure of what I expected.   But  Buckhorn Cabin exceeded my expectations.  We are right in view of the lake in a nicely furnished cabin, just perfect for the two of us.
Karen, the manager, checked in with us to see is we have everything we need.  Peter is very pleased, especially after staying in the dumpy Alpine Inn.  Why did we take so long to wake up?  We have a picnic table and grill right outside our door and had our picnic after unpacking.  We met our neighbors  Anthony and Brittany from Milwaukee who were married on Saturday.  We sat on the beach until the clouds covered the sun and it started cooling off.  The forecast looks good for the next few days

Cool overcast day, mid 50s.  After breakfast,  we drove to the Lake Nakomis Cranberry marsh for the 11 a.m tour.  We were 10 minutes late and need to be there almost an hour before the tour to get our place on the 19 - passenger bus. I bought some jelly and we drove to Lake Tomahawk to just kill time and look over the scenery.  We got back just after noon  and got our numbered tickets for the 1:00 p.m.. tour.   Our guide was from Elm Grove and took us to one of the plots to see how cranberries grow and bite into one to see the four chambers that are hollow and make the berries float.
We were really impressed with all the information and seeing the harvesting process.  To see a man pull on a very long collar to get the berries concentrated in an area for the men to scoop them into a truck looked like extremely hard work.
The colors were stunning,  even with a few rain drops.  The tour lasted about 45 minutes.
We drove into Eagle River and walked around the downtown.  We bought some paper towels and a night light at a Dollar Store, and  a small bread at Pick 'n Save.  It was too late for lunch and too early for dinner, but I GOOGLE some nearby restaurants and we chose the White Spruce Inn on Hwy 45, where I remember eating many years ago.  We deciding to have a drink at the bar before having dinner.   We read the Today paper and I told the hostess to save a place for us by the window when we were ready to eat.  I had a martini on the rocks,  Peter had a gin and tonic before getting to our table strategically placed by a window. I had a half rack of ribs, Peter a Jaegerscnitzel which we both enjoyed.  It was still light enough to see some properties on the road beyond us. It was a very enjoyable day.

Cheese omelets for breakfast. 30 degrees.  We left at 10 a.m heading towards Boulder Junction with our picnic supplies and high hopes for warmer weather.  We parked and walked through the shops up and down the main street.  It was a nice walk and a lot of Northwoods merchandise.  We set our destination  for Star Lake, hoping to find a campsite for our picnic.  It was nearing 60 degrees, double this morning's temperature. We found a nicely sheltered spot and spread out to have a leisurely meal.  After eating, Peter found a sunny spot next to the water where we sat for awhile, and I did some knitting, until the sun shifted and we were feeling cold.  We marveled at the serenity.
Peter wanted to locate a friend who summers on Little Lake Germain  so we headed for the Northwoods bar and Grill, hoping he frequented there.  Peter was directed to the Twilight Lounge which was our next destination.  So much for serenity! It was very noisy: pounding, loud laughing, music and loud talking. Drinks were cheap, but I didn't think that I wanted to eat there.  After considering the options, we ordered hamburgers and a second gin and tonic.  The entire bill was $30.  We had a very full day, which ended by watching the sunset.  We played dominoes before calling it a day.

We were pretty well packed and ready to go last night,  just for last minute cleaning up and emptying the frig.  We went to St. Mary's in Saynor for the 9 a.m. mass.  The priest was difficult to understand, seemed Indian so the printed sermon was unusual, but helpful.  After mass we headed to the Northwoods  Family Restaurant,  but wound up at CC's.  When I asked if this was the Northwoods Restaurant, the hostess gave me  blank look and said there was DJ'S and something else.  There was a wait, but then the hostess came out to the people waiting outside, apologizing that she lost her chef.  We headed to DJ'S and discovered that it was the Northwood ' s Restaurant.  We had another wait, but got some coffee served while we were waiting.  I had eggs Benedict with a potato pancake, Peter had bacon and eggs.  We got back to our cabin at 11:50, 10 minutes before check-out.  Karen was already in our area, but Peter didn't recognize her.  We cleared out the frig, and were out shortly after noon.  When we thought about it, we could have checked out before going to church; we had plenty of time and we wouldn't have backtracked the same road.
Peter drove the entire way, even though he offered me to drive at a rest stop.  We still haven't got the cruise control figured out, and I didn't want to experiment while I was driving.  As we were heading towards Milwaukee, I suggested Su Casa for our meal, which sounded like a good idea to Peter.  We shared a steak fajita, I had a margarita.  It was very filling.  We unloaded my luggage at Peter's house and I was on my way home to be greeted by Hello Dolly.  It was a warm reunion.

Quilt Barns

August 22, 2017

The Vagabonds had a unique experience traveling through Walworth County with Tom Laughlin leading our bus trip.  He was very thorough explaining much of the countryside and many of the quilt barns on our route.

We started with the Merry Water Farm that had 3000 cows, milking about 1500.

And the barn.

Dave Woodrich is a veteran and proudly calls his quilt "American Pride"

We passed a number of quilt barns along the way that we took photos of while on the bus.

The most spectacular property was Doug Amon's rose garden that he calls Stop & Smell the Roses.  He has more than 400 roses planted in honor of his deceased wife who loved roses.  Every rose was set in the ground in large pots and prominently labeled.  The roses are dug up in the fall and stored in a garage at controlled temperature.  Doug was most congenial, answering many questions and handing our 2018 calendars with pictures of his roses.  He invited us for his pig roast on September 10th.

Our last stop was at a farm with Jersey cows.  The family told us about their farm and their decision to raise Jerseys: smaller cows, eat less, produce less milk, but richer in butter fat.

We also drove around the Elkhorn County Fair grounds that had a number of quilts and was getting ready for the County Fair.

Portsmouth 2017

Saturday, August 5, 2017
Claude and I left at 7:30 a.m., dropped the Volvo at Economy, and met the Dorns at the Southwest desk. The Sorensens arrived shortly after.

The flight to Boston was pleasant, arriving at 1:20 p.m. Jay went ahead to arrange for the rental vans;
we followed, after collecting our luggage. Brad's GPS got us to 20 W. Thorpe Ave. with no problem where we will be residing for the coming week.  Somehow, Jay made some error and he arrived almost an hour later.

We assessed the sleeping arrangements and Claude volunteered to sleep on the couch. The boys will sleep downstairs, as will Laura and Jay; Brad and Janice will have the other bedroom, Annika will sleep on the floor. I will have a bedroom to myself.
Laura, Jay and Janice planned menus for the next couple of days and grocery shopped. We searched nearby restaurants for tonight's supper, but most had long wait times. Pizzas would be the best idea.

Sunday, August 6, 2017
Janice, Brad, Claude and I went to the 8:30 a.m. mass at St. Anthony's Parish. After mass we stopped to
chat with the pastor.  When we told him that we were going to the park named after Roger Williams https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_Williams he said that he was a descendant of the founder of Portsmouth.

The Conservatory of Roger Williams Botanical Gardens consisted of four buildings and gardens.

A park bench and a bistro table provided a place to have lunch, with a homestead nearby.

After relaxing at home we dressed for our 7:15 p.m. dinner at The Boathouse. Our table was ready at a table overlooking the ocean. I enjoyed a delicious
seafood scampi, a mix of shrimp scallops and lobster over linguini, that I enjoyed very much with my
martini. Everyone else seemed to enjoy their entrees as well.

Claude, Janice and Jay worked on a puzzle to finish their evening.

Monday, August 7, 2017
Janice made an egg/cheese dish with a corn flakes topping and hash browns plus fresh fruit.

Brad tested the ocean.

Our original plan was to do a mansion tour. Aleksei is under the weather and it would be a wasted ticket
if we went. Since it is not a dated ticket, we can go another time. We headed for the New Bedford
Maritime Whaling Museum.

We watched a whaling movie in the Information building before going to
the museum. It was vast, with floors and rooms filled with fascinating artifacts and stories. I was especially impressed with the scrimshaw room, containing intricate carvings on utensils, jewelry and other objects made from whale bones and teeth.

We met at 2:00 p.m. and found a food store for more
supplies; the food store was not as well stocked as others. We found a place to spread our food (cheese
crackers sausage, chips, cookies, apple and beverages) on the waterfront near a military museum. After we ate we walked through the museum that was loaded on every wall and cabinets filled with collections from every war. There was no admission, but donations were accepted by volunteers who answered our questions. It was an overcast day with a few sprinkles. We made good use of it. We ate
local at Localz Restaurant, very near our home. We were quite satisfied; Aleksei was still not able to join
us because his stomach was unsettled. We finished the evening playing Tribond, a game where a team
had to guess the common bond of three phrases/words. A lot of fun.

Tuesday, August 8, 2017
Jay made pancakes, sausage, fruit, with some of yesterday's egg dish.

We browsed the cute shops at the wharf before setting sail for our 12:30 p.m. schooner ride on an overcast day, holding my breath that it wouldn't rain.

We had no rain, but sunshine and calm waters on a lovely sail that everyone enjoyed.

c

Jay and the boys brought coolers to a nearby square for our light lunch, just enough to satisfy us until dinner.

Janice, Brad, Claude and I went to the Trinity Church that was once visited by George Washington and Queen Elizabeth II.

We walked back to the wharf checking out restaurants for dinner, but there would be too much time to fill until dinner time. When we assembled, I suggested that each car group explore on their own and we'd meet at the house at 6:00 p.m. and have dinner at J.J.Dion's in Bristol. Janice wanted to do a walking path, but we changed course when we learned about the first tavern in America near where our car was parked. It was a cozy place and the bartender gave us some historical facts. There were also people from Milwaukee sitting at the bar. We had beers, and cocktails outdoors.

We got home shortly before 6:00 p.m., with just enough time to get ready for dinner.  We had table in a private room indoors. I had delicious baked scallops with mushrooms and cheddar cheese in Marsala
sauce.

Everyone enjoyed their meals. The day was a huge success.

Wednesday, August 9, 2017
Laura prepared an egg dish together with a lot of fresh fruit with halved grapes. We made a stop for groceries before heading to the Breakers. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Breakers. Head phones were included in admission and enhanced the experience tremendously. We could pace ourselves and get a lot of information without having to strain to hear a docent. The mansion was beyond description, with so much opulence.

We drove to Brenton Point State Park where we had our lunch with one of the most spectacular views of the east coast.

We saw some kite flying as we ate.

A man offered to take our picture.

The nearby Marble House was our next stop. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marble_House. There weren't as many people because the Breakers is more popular.  Again, we had earphones and paced ourselves along the tour. Everyone enjoyed both
houses.

We drove home and relaxed until time for dinner at the 15 Point Restaurant where we ate on the deck
with a guitar player in the background. I was comfortable with my stole as was Laura with her newly
purchased poncho.

Thursday, August 10, 2017
Everyone sang "Happy Birthday" to Peter this morning. We are splitting our destinations: the Dorns want
to see the Patriot stadium, the rest are researching other destinations.
Laura, Jay, Annika Claude and I took off for Bristol. We explored some shops; I bought a quill card and
frame for Laura 's birthday. We looked into  restaurants and a couple look promising.

We found an ideal picnic spot for lunch before continuing our exploring.

We drove to the Slater Mill in Pawtucket where a guide gave us a personal tour, explaining much of the machinery and operating some. I learned a lot about the textile industry. It was a very worthwhile place to spend some time.

On the way home I made reservations for tonight's and tomorrow night's dinners in Bristol.
We had delicious dinners at Le Central Bistro in Bristol. Colin and I had grilled lobster with fingerling
potatoes, green beans and beets, done to perfection.

We ended the evening sitting around a bonfire toasting marshmallows.

Friday, August 11, 2017
Janice's breakfast was Company French Toast, that satisfied all of us nicely.
We drove to Coventry, RI to the homestead of Nathanael Green a Revolutionary War General, very respected by George Washington.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nathanael_Greene.

We watched a video with text from Wikipedia, with very distracting background music that competed with the narration.  A 14-year old docent gave a remarkable tour. It was definitely non-text, and he was able to answer our questions with a lot of confidence as he led us through the house. We are visiting history.

Next we drove to Wickford, parking at the wharf to spread out our lunch. It was just perfect, with
sailboats and kayaks in the water. After lunch, we walked through the town's little shops. Claude and I
walked together and I bought a colorful top; there is no tax on clothing.  We stopped for groceries for tomorrow's last breakfast before heading back to relax before dinner in Bristol.

Saturday, August 12, 2017
We explored some of the Boston area before our plane departed for Milwaukee.
