Busy Saturday

 Saturday, February 26, 2922

Before my hair appointment at noon, I picked up wine at Consumer Beverage: two small bottles, plus a red and white for myself.  At Festival Foods I bought some saltines for a snack recipe.  I needed to do my shopping before my hair because I promised to take John Peter for kringle.

I called John Peter after my hair that I would be at SRS at 1:15 p.m. and I was there on the dot.  John Peter seemed a little apprehensive driving on the freeway, but I assured him that I was a safe driver.  He bought two kringles for our after-mass gathering; I bought a couple of Danish.

We stopped at the Metro Mart on Van Buren for John Peter's prescription, plus some groceries that he needed.  I encouraged him to buy what he needed while he was there.  He was greatly appreciative.

I tried taking a nap when I got to my apartment, but was satisfied with just resting a while.  I found my travel blog and enjoyed reading of my adventures.

We were invited to Jay and Laura's for dinner at 5:30 p.m.  Jay prepared a pasta dish with bacon and cheese with a tossed salad, very delicious with a dessert of warm pears with vanilla ice cream topped with an amaretto cookie.

I shouldn't have asked Peter if his check to the Homeland Security was cashed.  That evolved into a lot of questions and ribbing at his expense.

As You Like It

 Sunday, February 20, 2022

Laura picked me up and dropped me off at the Rep.  On the way I asked if she had her immunization card.  I neglected to tell her, so she did not have it.  I could not access her record online, and the management was very strict.  After a number of tries, Laura suggested that Jay take a picture of it and send it to me.  I called him when I wasn't getting it; he had an incorrect phone number.  Finally, I got the photo and we were all set, except to download the tickets.  When one doesn't do this every day it isn't easy to remember the procedure.  We got to our seats and enjoyed a very lively, musical and funny production.  It was great, even with the anxiety.  I appreciated getting a ride home.

We were celebrating Jackie Haessley's Birthday with a pot luck in the club room.  I brought a bottle of wine.  There was a very nice large gathering.  After everyone left, I stayed to visit with Gene, Don and Jackie.  It was so very nice in a quiet room.

Art Show

 Friday, February 18, 2022

We had a wonderful display of talent today.  We set up our projects at about noon for the art show to begin at 1:00 p.m.  Glass, painting, photography, quilting, paper and publishing were arranged on tables.  We have some real talent here.

Jackie Haessly, who is 85 today, had photographs and knitting.

Lanore Lee painted a picture to accompany a poem.

Cookie Anderson has an a 1000 origami crane hanging, plus other art projects.

John Peter Wolter copied a Van Gogh print.

Barbara Todd showed a glass piece created by her daughter.
Janice Collins has a book that she co-edited, plus a painting, photograph cards and hot pads.
Charlotte Crysdale did some paintings.

Counted cross stitch my Marilyn Minor.

John Bales showed his stained glass lamp and paintings.

Rikki Thompson had books of his photography.  He is a professional photographer.

I showed my books of trips and photo greeting cards.

Later, a violinist played beautiful classical and some jazz music for our entertainment.  It added a nice touch.

A Nice Day

 Wednesday, February 16, 2022

After Listeria class I called That's Amore for the Red Hat reservation.  Before leaving for the Red Hat luncheon, Elizabeth Ward called to thank me for my cards and felt sorry for not responding.  I said it wasn't necessary.  She wanted us to meet and we agreed on 3:00 p.m. today.  The restaurant was really crowded. Terry was too ill to attend, but Charlotte from WAUC was invited and there were seven of us.

Elizabeth and I had a wonderful visit.  She had a patch on her left eye to relieve a problem with double vision.  She thanked me more than once for the cards that I sent.  She did not know that meals were served in the dining room; she thought she had to bring them to the table.  She didn't like that she had to sit alone; there were too many at the table, but she felt left out. I hope we can correct that.  I also suggested she come to the Wednesday fitness class.

We had story telling at 7:00 p.m.  Everyone was timed for five minutes.  There were some amusing stories.  We visited with snacks afterward.  I brought the rest of my Chex mix.

A Lot Happening

 Tuesday, February 15, 2022

After exercise class I did ten minutes on the treadmill.  Not too much time to spare for the SRS trip to The Knick for lunch with five others.  The menu looked wonderful, difficult to choose.  I ordered a blackened scallop salad.  It was so delicious, I cleaned the plate.  Unfortunately, I had side effects.  Midway through sheepshead I had to rush to the bathroom, and I hardly made it back to my room.  As much as I like salads, they don't like me.  But I don't have that problem at every restaurant.  I took an Imodium and that fixed the problem.

We played sheepshead longer than usual because we had to finish a few doublers.  I won about $1.20.  I didn't go to mass because we played late, also I had to get to the bathroom.

I made an appointment to see Dr. Kostopoulos on March 3rd.  My shortness of breath after the least bit of exertion is problematic.

Peter came for a salmon dinner with asparagus and mixed vegetables.  We were about to have coffee when Don came to thank me for the Valentine.  He sat and talked for a while, repeating much of what I already heard.

Peter had his laptop and thumb drives which we sorted out to find the last files that I gave him; the Germany movie, German slide show and Munison trip. We alphabetized his call list and I learned how to do it more efficiently.  Select the last item in the column and Sort.  I don't think I ever did it that way.

Valentine's Day 2022

 Saturday, February 12, 2022

I mixed the dough for heart-shaped cookies before my hair appointment.  I was 1/2 cup short of flour and was ready to go for more flour when I checked to see if I had powdered sugar.  Next to the powdered sugar was a zip-lock bag of flour.  I could have kissed it.  After my hair I did the cut-outs.  They turned out very nice.  A batch got browner than they should have, but I'll have them for myself.

After they were baked I found another box of Valentine cards at the Walgreen's on Brady Street.  I wanted to have enough to send to people in Assisting Living also.

Sunday, February 13

The cookies were a big hit after Sunday mass with coffee.  Rosemarie also had a zucchini loaf.

I made Chex mix for the Super Bowl game.

At 4:30 p.m. we had a Birthday party in the Club Room for Bob Mendelsohn who is 90 today.  They served pizza, some appetizers, wine and cake.

Some of us stayed to watch LA Rams beat the Cincinnati Bengals 23 - 20.  It was a very good game.

After 10:00 p.m. I distributed my little Valentine cards to all the rooms.  I had to make a few more for people I missed in Assisted Living.

February 14

Instead of exercising, I vacuumed, put my apartment in order then went grocery shopping: first to Fresh Thyme for salmon and some produce, then to Pick 'n Save for wine and V8.  I put the groceries away and prepared the salmon.

There was a virtual concert from Dominican HS, but we didn't seem to get the connection right, or else it was something on the other end.

The SRS party began at 2:30 p.m with wine, cup cakes and cookies.  We had a large gathering of red.  I told Peter to come at 3:30 for the Happy Hour, but it really started at 2:30; Abby said she wanted most of the party done before the musicians played.  It was 3:45 and Peter still hadn't shown up.  I checked my phone and his message said that he had been waiting at the door since 3:00.  I tried calling him with no answer.  Why would he be waiting at the front door?  There was no problem getting into the building, because there seemed to be a lot of traffic, both in and out.  When he finally did call and I asked if he waited in the driveway when he went to visit Rudy.  He said it's more than that.  He didn't bring his computer because he couldn't find the thumb drive that I told him to bring.  Why does that not surprise me?  But that still does not explain why he was waiting in his car instead of coming into the building.  I told him that he missed a wonderful afternoon, plus a delicious salmon dinner.  As a matter of fact, I don't have much of an appetite.

Art Museum/Sheepshead

 Friday, February 11, 2022

The day started with exercise in the fitness room, an assault on my ears.  What a difference from the serene stretching on Wednesday when all we hear is the therapist giving instructions in her soothing voice and our breathing with occasional creaking of joints.  Today was loud mo-town music and a lot of incoherent talking, one above the other.

We met at 12:30 p.m. for a bus ride to the Art Museum for a showing black and white photographs of Vietnamese re-enactment scenes of the war and other native scenes.   Another gallery featured paintings of naval maneuvers.

We wandered through many of the other exhibits as time allowed.

I had to wait for someone to open the doors at St. Florian to play sheepshead from 6:00 - 11:00 p.m. (someone forgot to keep the doors unlocked).  Bob and Terry arrived later with Jan; Barbara didn't come and we were waiting for Mark.  In the meantime, Tom didn't have a group to play with so he joined ours.  When Mark came we had a table of six.  We had some very good games; however whenever I picked, I lost, even with a fairly good hand.  There was tap beer and assorted beverages and bags of popcorn.  Terry brought sausage roll-ups.  A generous meal was served with a large assortment of food: mashed potatoes, beef, pork, chicken, sausage, beans and potato salad, plus cake.  Most people were calling it a night at 10:00 p.m. which was long enough for me.  I must have won about 20 cents.  I don't know if I'd like to do this again.

Feel-good Thursday

 Thursday, February 10, 2022

I had a 10-minute chair massage by Glenn Shein in the fitness room.  I really miss those massages.  I'm going to take advantage of them more often, since he offers them right in our rooms.

Lunch with Ladies of Lee-sure at Maggiano's in Mayfair.  I had a combination lunch of salad and flatbread with sausage; it was listed as 1/2 portion, but looked like a full portion to me.  There was also a take-out special of $5.00 for any of the six pasta dishes.  We thought that was a real bargain.  I took home spaghetti and meat balls and four-cheese ravioli.  You can't get a take-out from McDonald's for that price.

A nice group gathered for dominoes.

Joined WAUC tutorial on Zoom; did not amount to much.

Sunny Sunday in February

 Sunday, February 6, 2022

We had a very nice turnout at the Austrian Club meeting, more than I've seen in a long time.  I brought a dozen heart shaped cookies and I didn't think there would be enough, but Peter and I could each take two home.  I announced that I would not chair the Culture Booth.  Frank considered it a good sitting job and offered to work at it.  Peter also would like to see it continue.  I hope they get more volunteers to make the job less tedious.

We took a country ride afterward and ended up at Schooner Bar and Grill in Port Washington.  We had a table where we faced the lake on a beautiful sunny day.  Peter had a BLT; I had Ham and Cheese with Lakefront Stein.  We had a very full afternoon and evening.
