Week 6: Aaron, Zellmer, License, Laura

 Sunday, February 18, 2024

Yesterday's frittata was delicious with a couple of sausage links.

I wrote a polanca https://www.sanjosecursillo.org/resources/palanca to Janice's friend Aaron who will be Confirmed and Janice will be his sponsor. I found a prayer of St. Thomas Aquinas that Aaron chose for his Confirmation name, and added a personal note. Janice and Aaron went to St. John the Evangelist Cathedral for a ceremony that included all the Confirmands in the diocese and Janice met Father Tim.

I spent most of the day watching Poirot.

Monday, 2/19

It's Laura's week to call.  She did, and very somberly said that she is checking in to Rogers in West Allis

Tuesday: Primary Election

My apartment got cleaned.
Fitness at 10:30 a.m.,
Lunch and Learn by Eastside Senior Services with many volunteers willing to help with a number of things, like transportation, snow shoveling, small tasks.  There are services we can do, like send cards and make phone calls.
I did pretty good in sheepshead for a change.
Prayer Shawl Ministry added Mary to our group.
I read at the 4:00 p.m. mass.

Wednesday

I got pulled over because I was driving with an expired registration (2 years overdue!).  I have no idea how I could have neglected that.  I could have gotten a citation and a fine, especially after such a lapse, but the officer let me go.
The Red Hats had lunch at HuHot Mongolian Grill, between Cleveland Ave. and Oklahoma Ave. on Hwy. 100.  Terry was at sheepshead and forgot; therefore, she was late.  But that wasn't any problem.  There were two very large buffets with meats and vegetables, another with sauces.  All the food was cold.  We put the food in one or two bowls, and then took our bowls to a huge circular grill.  The cook placed the contents of our bowl(s) and stir fried them.  There were multiple bowls being prepared simultaneously.  The chef then scooped our cooked contents onto a plate.  It was all-you-can-eat.  I went back for a small second portion.
On the way to sheepshead, I told Terry about Laura's problem.  She thought Laura is on the right track by admitting her problem and seeking help.  I stayed for only a couple of hands, because I wanted to get that registration taken care of.
I drove to the DMV on Grange Ave, didn't wait too long, the there was a problem because I needed an emission test.  Reis Auto Service did it until 3:00 p.m. and it was after 4:00.  I'll have a full day tomorrow with an eye exam at 1:00 p.m.  But I can get to a garage near here and then go to the DMV on Howell Ave.

Thursday, February 22

It was a little difficult to find Sanfelippo's Auto Repair, kind of hidden behind a McDonald's.  It's a huge, very neat garage.  A car before me was just getting completed when I pulled up.  My car passed and Mr. Sanfellipo said that I could get my sticker right there.  When he looked up my record he asked if I had paid online, the same question the DMV asked.  He said that I was paid until 2024.  He could not issue a sticker if one was lost, because his were counted; he advised me to go to the DMV and tell them my sticker was lost.  I drove to the DMV on Chase Ave, no wait at all, got my sticker and put it on.
I found Landmark Restaurant on Kinnickinnic Ave.  and had a Belgian waffle, sausage and coffee.  The waffle was nicely done, but doughy.

I was in time to do fitness.

I left the dominos by our table in the event I didn't come back from my eye exam in time.

I have to remember that the Eye Clinic is south of Brady St.  I had some images taken and then went to the upper level for a test where I would click when I saw flashing lights.

Dominos had just started when I got back, so I got in the game with a full table.  Tamiko served Margaritas at the cocktail hour.  Joan Squire came late to dominos, so she was our hostess and served our drinks.

Friday, February 23
After fitness, I stayed in the Trattoria until Janice came; unfortunately, I had my phone on silent and didn't hear her call.  We had a delicious cauliflower and bean soup with crusty French bread and a cherry chocolate cake with chocolate ice cream for dessert.  We had a lot to talk about concerning Laura.
It got colder and is starting to snow.
Laura called me while I was waiting for my eye exam.
I had an eye exam at 3:30 p.m. I told the doctor that I difficulty focusing when I'm reading.  Hopefully a new prescription will help,  My macular degeneration has been held steady; Preservision seems to be working.  Other tests look normal.
Driving home in the snow with dilated pupils wasn't easy; the overcast skies helped, but not oncoming lights.
I had a phone conversation with Laura.  She will be attending rehab sessions at home for the next four weeks and attending AA daily.  She is on medication to control her craving. She sounded positive.
I had a very nice baked potato with butter, sour cream and grated cheese for supper.

Saturday, February 24
Jocylin gave me a color and cut with my style today.  The AA store on Greenfield Ave. was closed; I wanted to buy a card for Laura.  I shopped for sloppy Joes for the pot luck tomorrow.
Peter and I split a smoked pork chop dinner at the Bavarian Bierhaus with wine; I had key lime pie, Peter a strudel and we finished off with coffee.  I was comfortable with my coat on.

Games and Lonely Pot Luck Breakfast

Thursday, February 15, 2024

We had some snow through the night, but not very much over here.  Janice said that Brad had to get out the snow blower in Cedarburg.

I did the chair workout; it is so pleasant with a video and no one talks.  I had a nice cold drink of water with lemon afterwards while I worked on my puzzles.  I got Wordl in 2 with ASCOT.  I flunked in Connections, but I got to the Genius level in connections with CONTINUUM as the bonus word.

I left the dominoes for the group, since I have a perm on 1:15 p.m.  Emma gave me the perm that took two hours.  I really like her gentle touch.
I stopped at Stein's for African violet soil and a pot; I really didn't need a pot.  I also bought a dress and then to Target for some tights.

Saturday
I prepared a large frittata with mushrooms, yellow pepper, zucchini and spinach, with a touch of green onion and garlic for a group breakfast.  Places were set in the dining room, but no one came.  I ate alone until Dwight Morgan joined me for coffee.  This will be the last time I'm going to do this.

I joined Jackie Heassly, Jeanne Heinen and Joan Squire in the game room.  They were reading over the rules of some mountain adventure game.  The directions were so complicated and it looked like such a cheap game, I was ready to walk out.  Joan had another game that was a lot more fun.  Bill Schauder joined us and knew a lot of answers.

Talent Show

 Friday, February 16, 2024

Janice came with mushroom burgers and rolls, steamed green beans with a sauce and chocolate lava cake with ice cream.  Very delicious.
Before Janice left we looked at the craft display in the Cannoli room,   There were not as many items as the first show we had previously.

At 3:00 p.m. Cheri French and Bob Koebert hosted the Talent Show where our residents displayed their unique talents.

Tyler Paskyl amazed us by wiggling his ears, and Amy matched him, adding curling and clovering her tongue; Avery Aken led us in some sing-alongs.

Bruce and Terry Wiggens told us about their Mardi Gras trip and threw out trinkets.

Lanore Lee recited Anna's speech from "The King and I", with amazing memory.

Barbara Leigh read some poems that she composed.

Janice Collins recited "The Cremation of Sam McGee" by Robert Service, another memory challenge.

Marilyn Minor sang "It Might As Well Be Spring" and "My Funny Valentine", accompanied by Avery Aten.

Cookie Anderson showed us some of the Peep creations that she entered in previous Peep shows at Racine Fine Arts.

And a group put on a puppet show.

We ended with a parade led by people wearing shawls.

Peter and I went to Sazz's for delicious fish fries and ended the evening with drinks at the bar.
Before going to SRS, Peter got me to ECU for some cash.

Valentine's Day/Mardi Gras/Talent Show

 Tuesday, February 13, 2024

Our Mardi Gras started immediately after mass in the Fitness room as we assembled with our hat creations and played instruments provided by Avery Aten, who led us on his large tom tom.

We lined up and paraded through the first floor dining room and lobby.  We had a lot of spectators, including Father Tim, who said mass.  He said he had one paczek, and with a sour face said that it was not prune filled.

Next we went to the B Tower and paraded through the 5th and 3rd floors. That brought a lot of clapping and smiles.

We ended on a happy note to prepare for the Lenten season ahead.

Wednesday, February 14, 2024

We had a Valentine party at 2:00 p.m. that was a combination of the Cocktail Hour and Happy Hour with cookies and other snacks.  Mikka hosted the cocktail hour with a pink cocktail in stemmed glasses rimmed with sugar and garnished with a strawberry slice.

Rita Edwards has her cocktail, with ashes still on her forehead.

Ash Wednesday/Valentine's Day

February 14, 2024

Ash Wednesday/Valentine's Day

After breakfast I passed out my little Valentine cards; I should have done that yesterday.  I was short a few because of new people.  We are full at the present time.  I didn't finish because the Town Hall meeting was at 11:00 a.m.  We were notified that there was a break-in in the garage and unlocked cars had glove boxes opened, including mine!  When I took Dolly to the vet everything from my glove box was scattered.  I thought it was when I was looking for the Astor gate opener and I didn't put things back. My lovely Singapore purse with all my merchant cards was gone, and I might have had some change in a smaller purse.  We are instructed to lock our cars in the garage and be sure that no one follows us in.

I read at the noon mass,

I stopped working on a knitted cap to drive Charlotte to the Whitefish Bay Library to return the device for listening to audio books.

We had some nice stories about someone that inspired you at the story sharing time in the evening.  Jeanne Heinen showed us a scrapbook that she recently received from a former student.

Paczki/Mardi Gras

 Tuesday, February 13, 2024

I was at Sciortino Bakery at 7:30 a.m. to pick up the eight prune-filled paczki I ordered.  I would have preferred sugar coating instead of glazed, but they were generously filled.  I cut them in two, since they were quite large.

I fixed yogurt, banana and sliced almonds for my breakfast, put Dolly in her carrier to take to the vet and arranged the paczki on our table.  I was disappointed by the number of people that came to breakfast; half the amount that came last Tuesday.  But those who came enjoyed the paczki.

Dolly traveled well, both to and from the vet.  Her exam was interrupted by an emergency, but she behaved very well, all 16.8 pounds of her.

We had two tables of sheepshead until it was time for the 4:00 p.m. mass.

Austrian American Meeting, Super Bowl

 Sunday, February 11, 2024

Peter and I attended the first Austrian American meeting of 2024.  Peter counted 17 people attending.

I skipped the pot luck, since I didn't have time to prepare anything.  I didn't care to go since many of us wanted to watch the Super Bowl.

I put together a dip for pretzels.  I should have mixed it last night to have it chill, but it chilled for about an hour.

Ron, Kathy and Rita were in the Club Room when I arrived for the pre-game program, but we had a pretty full room by game time.  Everyone carried in something to eat and we had a counter full: a huge taco salad, a taco dip, pretzels and dip, Dwight brought chicken wings, there was a veggie platter, Cheri brought barbecued meat balls, Marilyn brought brownie cup cakes with fresh strawberries.  She served her dessert before we stopped at half time.

I was getting discouraged with the Chiefs; they were not commanding the field as I expected, and they were trailing.  The game was tied at 19 at the end of regular play.  The Chiefs did not disappoint with a stunning touchdown in overtime.to win 25 - 22.

Week 6 February 4 - 10

 Sunday, February 4, 2024

We gathered after mass for coffee and bakery.  Rita Edwards invited those sitting at the table for a get-together in her apartment at 4:00 p.m.  We had a lovely time with wine and some snacks and interesting conversation.  Rita is interested in everything scientific and political.  She had four magazines dealing with Artificial Intelligence.  I love this handy tripod.

Wednesday
Claude and I attended the At Issues at Marquette.  The topic was an overview of the various political polls.
Cookie ordered dinners from a Chinese restaurant.  I had rice and fried pork.  It was OK.  I brought hot tea that really hit the spot.

Thursday
Every morning Dolly wants to go on the balcony and nibble on the Mexican feather grass.

Today was a beautiful day with a lot of sunshine.
We had a fun group playing dominoes, even though Jack Champagne was nursing a sore mouth after having a tooth pulled.
Tyler's turn for cocktails and he served brandy old fashions.
People were creating Mardi Gras hats, combined with the cocktails it was a riot.

Friday
We had a full bus going to the America's Black Holocaust Museum and met two other Capri communities. A young docent met us to lead the group.  Since she was wearing a mask, it was difficult to understand with such a large group.  The displays were self-explanatory if one took the time to read everything.  The Journal Sentinel had an excellent article in the Sunday paper.

This photo brought sad memories of the turmoil  in caused to our family with Chet's abandoning the church.

We followed the Black History theme with lunch at Daddy's on 27th and Wells.  I had two peices of catfish, boiled cabbage, collard greens and a corn bread roll.

Saturday
Emma did my hair at noon.
I picked up some groceries at Pick 'n Save on Hwy 100.
In the evening Peter and I went to another Mardi Gras at the Doubleday Hotel on Bluemound Road.  The room was too small for our large group.  Tables were arranged in rows with hardly any room to move about.
These cute decorations were on all the tables.  The base is a soup can.

The Mullers performed and I danced with a bear.

Week 5 January 29 - February 3 Dinner at J & L's with Aleksei, Lunch with Janice, Breakfast Pot Luck, Dinner with Peter

 Sunday, January 28, 2024

I took a shawl to be blessed to give to Ava Tarantino after mass.  During mass Jackie texted me asking if I had shawls for Ava's two brothers.  I did not.  I left before the mass was completely over and got two more shawls from my closet.  Ava, Michael and Sal(vador) were deeply touched receiving the shawls.  I need to make more shawls with subdued colors for men.

I stayed for coffee and bakery and chatted with Jackie, Rita, Carol K, and Jeanne H.

I worked on my blog about Mardi Gras until it was time for Aleksei to pick me up for dinner; he is home for a week from Lake Tahoe.  We munched on appetizers and chatted, and then had a similar repeat of Christmas dinner with beef tenderloin, salad and baked potatoes with multiple toppings.

Aleksei took me home and will spend the night with Annika.

Tuesday, January 30
Strength workout.
A nice group showed up for Book Club, with some interesting books
Instead of sheepshead, I went to the Meet and Greet, with mostly longer residents instead of newer ones.  We talked about where we were born and where we traveled, with unusual travel experiences. I went to mass, but when I checked my email and saw that  $900 was debited from my account I became so alarmed I called ECU right away.  Getting someone to talk to was another story.  I was so frustrated that I almost threw my phone.  The person I finally spoke with said there had been no withdrawals of that amount.

Wednesday, January 31
I found the Portsmouth earring that I lost a few months ago.  I heard a little noise in the tissue box as I was flattening it.  There it was!  I kissed it!
I needed nickels for sheepshead, so when I gave the teller my $20 bill it slipping between a space in the drawer and landed on the ground.  Good thing there was no wind.  Four tables of five played at Muskego Public Library.  I had mostly lousy cards, and with the decent cards that I had I still lost.
I shopped at Festival for a few future dinner items: chicken breast, shrimp, baking potatoes and stir-fry vegetables.
I'm glad that I have a food truck on Pleasant Street, because it was almost 6:00 p.m. by the time I got home.  I had three steak tacos.

Friday, February 2
Janice came with delicious broccoli soup, rolls, and brownies with vanilla ice cream for our lunch.  The wallet that I ordered for Brad yesterday was delivered while she was here.  Brad wanted a slim wallet that would fit in his front pants pocket when they are traveling to Grand Cayman.  We talked a lot about Laura's alcoholism.  Janice had shared our concern with Claude.
I took Charlotte Crysdale to the Whitefish Bay Library to pick up a machine to listen to audio books.  It is very bulky, and the selection of available books is not too great.  I hope that I can help her with listening to books on her phone.
Trying to find parking at Alphonsus for sheepshead was a challenge.  I was tempted to turn around and head back home.  I found a corner spot not too far away.  I lost about $1.50.  The food was about the same as St. Florian's.  There was a big crowd, and very noisy, especially when the announcer was calling off prizes and raffles.
When I got home the message from Jay was very disturbing:
8:32 p.m. "Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.  She had 10 oz. of vodka tonight.  About the same as 8 shots.  She is not belligerent and has become a most excellent liar.  No anger on my part, just sad.  Al anon is helping me"

Saturday, February 3
I had a very sleepless night after receiving that message.
There was a sparse showing at the breakfast pot luck this morning.  Jackie H. had an egg and spinach dish, Terry and Bruce brought apple pie steel cut oatmeal, I brought the second loaf of pumpkin bread, there was some pineapple and Danish.  Dwight showed up for coffee but did not partake; others were noticeably absent.
I had to leave early for my 10:00 a.m. hair appointment.
I shopped at Walmart for some household and pet things.  The store had a lot of greeters and a lot more manned check-outs.
Peter and I went to the Fortune Restaurant.  I had shrimp and snow peas; the shrimp were large and plentiful with lots of crisp peas.  We finished the evening with cone/cup of butter pecan at Leon's
