2022 Memorial Day

 Monday, May 30, 2022

I made a very large broccoli salad for Anita's get-together this afternoon.  SRS is having a cook-out which I would have to miss.

Peter and I arrived exactly at 1:00 p.m. followed by John and Mary McGinnis, Eileen and her son David, another younger couple and Sharon; Montana is a young man who assists Anita.  We gathered in the back with adequate lawn furniture, dappled sunlight and a light breeze that at times we needed to anchor the settings.  There were appetizers and beverages before dinner at about 3:00 p.m.  Chicken, brats, baked beans, potato salad, bean salad, my broccoli salad, and sour kraut were on the buffet table.  Everything was very good.  We enjoyed Eileen's coconut cream pie plus strawberries and ice cream for dessert.

I wish everything stopped there.  Subjects taught in school, homosexuality, voting, election fraud, illegal voting took over the conversation.  I was very uncomfortable.  I looked at my watch and told Peter that it was time to go. I went in the kitchen to collect my belonging and waited while he tried to get his last words in.

I'm going to have other plans the next time Anita invites us.

2022 Vagabond Picnic

 Sunday, May 29, 2022

I made a BLT wrap in the morning to share with Peter for lunch.  I made too much filling; but it should provide my suppers for a few days. Peter brought beverages.

The morning was cool and breezy, only about 60 degrees, so I made sure to have warmer clothes when I'd be sitting at Whitnall Park.  I wore long pants, and took along my hooded sweat shirt and wind breaker.  As I'm driving, my car thermometer is registering over 70 degrees, and 79 when I got to the park.  What a leap!

Peter offered to bring Helen Hankwitz, so I was there earlier with only a few people.  It seemed very disappointing.  The day was beautiful and we had a nice location in Area #5.  Gradually more people showed up to make a very nice group.

The sheepshead group needed another player and I offered.  I made some very bad mistakes, like I didn't know what I was doing.  There were no recriminations, all in good fun.  They were happy for me to part with my money.

Ascension of Our Lord

 Saturday, May 28, 2022

We have a very nice full weekend with a promise of nice weather.  I offered to bring a salad to Anita's on Monday, but first I needed a big enough salad bowl.  I donated my salad bowls when I downsized, so now I have to buy one back.  I found a very nice one at Goodwill for $3.99, plus a nice looking top.

I bought my groceries next at Walmart for everything I'd need for the Vagabond picnic and the salad, plus other groceries.

I told Janice that Peter and I would be attending the 4:00 p.m. mass at St. Joseph's where she is a cantor.  She had sent me recordings, but being there would be nice to hear.  Peter was at SRS well before 3:15 p.m. and we were at St. Joseph's with plenty of time to spare.

We sat right next to where Janice was singing.  The mass was beautiful with the priest singing all of the Eucharistic Prayers and the congregation gesturing along with the music. Janice's powerful voice led the very spirited hymns.  Peter said she sang like a nightingale, and I couldn't agree more.  I was amazed to hear her beautiful voice.

At communion the priest stopped and thanked her for the gift of her voice.  Other people remarked at her beautiful singing.

We picked up a bottle of wine at Sendik's before going to the Dorns' for dinner.  We had wine and visited with Janice and Colin while waiting for Brad to return from his church service where he is an usher and an elder.  Janice served a Mexican Fiesta of enchiladas, taco chips and salsa, guacamole and a salad.  It was hard to pass up second helpings when we had to make room for dessert, which was a chocolate pudding and raspberries.  But Peter indulged with a second trip to the buffet.

We had such a wonderful time talking about how we pronounce/mispronounce certain words, all in good fun.

May 2022 Birthdays

 Friday, May 27, 2022

I have been at St. Rita Square one year as of Tuesday, the 24th. I am so very happy that I made this decision.  I have done so many things, met so many nice people and I am very content.

Today we celebrated May Birthdays with hot (warm) dogs, potato salad, relishes and a cookie accompanied by Anthony Deutsch on keyboard.  His music was so mellow and tasteful.  As I listened, I knew he was exactly what I want for my 90th Birthday party.  We talked afterward and it is arranged.

Jackie and I shifted our dining equipment from the Club Room to the Canoli Room for future Potlucks.  She said the we make a good team.

Pot Luck

 Monday, May 23, 2022

I got a lot of feedback and possible solutions to my Potluck post yesterday.

Our Sunday Pot Luck suppers have become very popular and a great way to fill the void when we don’t have meal service.  The colors, aromas and taste of all the different foods combine to make an appealing plate.  And there is plenty of food; too much to have to balance on your lap.

The Club Room is ideal for gathering at presentations like poetry readings with finger food afterward.  But it has its limitations for a Pot Luck.  Even with combining all the tables, there are just so many that can sit at the table.  Others have to sit on the couch and/or arm chairs to balance their food and beverage.

Could we consider moving the Pot Luck to the Dining Room with service in the Trattoria?  Or perhaps, just the Dining Room?  Let’s think about this before the next Pot Luck.

Sounds like a good idea to me. Last month was my first one, and I recall being told that the reason it was upstairs is that there was a more complete kitchen. We might need a rotating "potluck committee" to ferry the necessary supplies downstairs. And maybe we would have to request that more of us bring our own dinnerware. Sounds like something to discuss with Abby at the next "Enjoy Life" meeting.

I have another request: Let's all label our food, saying what it is, and what the ingredients are. For example, does it contain meat (vegetarians care) or dairy &/or eggs (for vegans) or allergens (e.g. gluten, nuts, soy.

Marilyn and I talked about this issue last week and the two of us looked at both dining area and Cannoli Room.

Dining area has fewer accessible outlets and less serving table space; also no storage space for our dishes and such.

Cannoli Room has cabinets for storage of our stuff. I prefer the long buffet cabinet; Marilyn preferred the smaller cupboard under the sink. Not sure that cupboard is big enough for all our stuff. Cannoli Room also has both a sink and a small fridge.

Both cabinets are currently filled with SRS stuff right now. Fridge has some staff food in it; some pretty old!!!

The two of us met with Maggie and asked about using the Cannoli Room. She will ask Abby on Monday. Abby would need to consolidate the various decorations.

Hopefully, we can have a solution soon.

Here’s what Lenore Lee said:

My issue is that it is very crowded at the potlucks. At the last event several relatives & friends attended making for a rather large crowd.

It was difficult to find a comfortable spot to eat with a table. The chairs are very large, taking up space.

I would rather go to the cannoli room or the trattoria.

Dwight Morgan added:

For what it is worth my 2 cents is not to make life more complicated. Couldn’t attendees bring their own service and then sinks are not an issue. Seems to me comfortable/available seating is the issues that is trying to be addressed.

It would be great if supplies could be moved downstairs before Memorial Day cookout; if weather cooperates, outdoors; if not, then in Cannoli Room.

Eleanor Harris said:

The dining room would be ideal. Much nicer than the Cannoli room as some have suggested. We'd have to ask for permission of course.

1) adding tables and chairs in Club Room would make it difficult to have space for people who use wheelchairs, scooters, and walkers to navigate safely;

 2) Tyler has confirmed that using sink in dining room is not doable; Morrison policy;

3) Abby and Tyler are fine with using Cannoli Room, and storing our items down there; they are looking at best storage options and will let us know what is doable.

Marilyn and I talked about this issue (That Marcia raised) last week and the two of us looked at both dining area and Cannoli Room.

Dining area has fewer accessible outlets and less serving table space; also no storage space for our dishes and such. (Also very tiny Sink).

M.Z. Let’s see what the final decision will be.

Neat Feet

 Monday, May 23, 2022

We are greeted by a bright, sunny sky with cool air.

My appointment at 9:30 a.m. with the podiatrist was awaited with much anticipation.  My left big toe nail is very loose and I'm fearful that I will catch it on something and it will painfully sever itself.  The podiatrist trimmed my toe nails and cut back the big left toe nail as far back as he could, with no discomfort.  He said that it was nothing to be concerned about now that I have it so short; it will not catch on to anything.

I did the balance in the fitness room and it was very good.

The plants on the balcony got a good soaking.

Booster, Fish Fry, Pot Luck

Thursday, May 19, 2022

I did not notice the Booster Sign-up in the binder, but Sue Contrell asked if I was going for my booster when we met in the Trattoria.  I didn't know about it.  I went back to my apartment for my card so it could be marked, filled out the information sheet and got the booster.

Friday, May 20, 2022

I was glued to "The Very Picture of You" by Isabel Wolff, and could not put it down.  I was still reading when I realized that Peter was picking me up in 15 minutes.  We had dinner at Pitch's; a pasta dish for Peter, shrimp scampi for me that was bathed in oil.  We finished with coffee.

Saturday, May 21, 2022

After my perm, I picked up prescriptions at Walgreen's, grocery shopped at P & S on Drexel and cosmetics at Merle Norman.  I decided to top off my gas tank, but thought I'd get a better price than $3.49 at Andy's; it was the same price.  I could use my P & S Rewards card to get $0.10 off.  Poor Richard's on Hwy 100 & Oklahoma had it for $3.39, less 10 cents, came to $2.29; that's the best price I could find.  I was appalled to see gas at $4.67 closer to downtown.

Lenore had a Birthday celebration in the Trattoria, which she advertised as "elegant"; a tray of vegetables and dip, cheese and crackers.  A lot of people gathered and the Trattoria was a good place to have it.

Sunday, May 22, 2022

I cooked a dozen eggs before mass to make deviled eggs for the potluck.  It didn't get started until sometime after 4:00 p.m. with not as many contributions.  We assembled the tables and as many as possible tried to squeeze around it; some people had to eat on the couch or arm chairs.  I hope we can change the venue to allow people to set at tables.

Knitting

 Tuesday, May 17, 2022

I made very many chemo caps during COVID, even though our group could not meet at Aurora.  I gave my supply to Janice.

Jackie Haessley was making shawls with a plain garter stitch, so I decided to use some of my yarn on that project.  I gave one to Laura, another to Janice.  I also knit a few scrubby dish cloths that I gave to new residents.

I had been giving my finished shawls to Jackie to take to St. Ben's  She thought St. Rita's had a knitting group that knitted shawls, and contacted a person through St. Rita's web site.  Today we met at 2:45 p.m. (I played sheepshead until that time) in the vestibule of the church.  We got introduced, said a prayer and knit while visiting.  Our shawls will be blessed and distributed to those in need.  The shawls that were gathered were bulky and warm, also of a generous size.  I'll have to make my next one a little bigger.  I have plenty of yarn that was provided.

Planting in the Piazza

Monday, May 16, 2022

Eleanor Harris and I ordered marigolds and salvia from Capri Plants that were delivered on Saturday.  Eleanor bought Bacopa plants at Bayside gardens today.  We announced that anyone wanting to help plant could gather at 4:00 p.m. to assist us planting.  Eleanor and I met beforehand to determine the placement of the plants.  We were joined by Jacob Smith, Lenore Lee, Marilyn Minor and Barbara Todd.  We filled the planter boxes, then planted a flat of salvia among the shrubbery in the raised bed on the street side next to the piazza.

Friday the 13th in May

The SRS bus took us the the Milwaukee Symphony, saving a lot of parking hassle.  I had paid $20 to park in the lot behind the hall.  The concert was great led by conductor Ruth Reinhardt who began the program with "Flounce", an imaginative piece by Lotta Wennakoski, then Antonin Dvorak's Symphony No. 2 in F major and concluding with Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2 played magnificently by Alessio Bax, who got a standing ovation with three curtain calls.  My music app is now selecting Brahms.

When I got to Peter's house before going to Alioto's, he showed me the yarn that he bought from Goodwill. I had asked him if Goodwill had any yarn.  I should have known that he'd buy some and he did, but not what I had in mind.  He had a few assorted skeins, not enough for a shawl and only two that would be suitable for caps.

We both had the two-piece fish fry and were finished in plenty of time for a slow ride to the Austrian American meeting.

There were only eight of us at the meeting: Frank, Peter, Gisella who made the coffee, John, Mary, Richard and I.  There was no excuse for not attending on this mild evening.  Frank was extremely rude to Peter the entire meeting.  Frank barked at him in a very insulting way with every comment he made,  I can't remember being more upset.  I couldn't wait until we left.

We could use a drink to finish off the evening.  We had gin and tonics back at Alioto's while watching the Bucks lose to the Celtics 108 - 95, tying the series 3 -3.  Sunday afternoon will decide the winner.

Driving home was more of a challenge.  The Bucks fans were on the streets, sidewalks and roads.  Water Street was blocked with a lot of detours.  I  couldn't imagine why there were fireworks to celebrate losing the game.  Those weren't fireworks I heard, but gunshots!

Planting

 Friday, May 12, 2022

I skipped exercise to take advantage of this beautiful weather to get my balcony planted.  Bayside Garden Center had a great selection of very healthy plants to choose from.  I found fibrous begonias, blue salvias, rosemary, thyme and basil; I also picked up a couple bags of potting mix.  I made up the pot of herbs and added the parsley and chives that I had on my window sill. After planting everything except the basil, I was worn out.  Everything was a mess with hauling supplies and soil to be swept up.

Planning for my 90th

 Monday, May 9, 2022

What better time to start making plans for my 90th than meeting with the Food and Beverage Manager after our MARTA luncheon at the Hampton Inn and Suites on Greenfield Ave.  Joe Lobenstein and I sat in the bar area and discussed possible menus, beverage plans and dates.  Because my birthday is on Saturday, September 24th, I want it on that day.  The date was available, but there was a difference in the minimum that had to be spent if it was held on a Saturday.  But with an open bar and top menu choices, I should have no problem reaching that minimum.

First Weekend in May

 Friday, May 6, 2022

We attended Eric Benz's funeral and stayed for the ceremony.  There were not as many people in attendance as at Donna's funeral on Tuesday, but people had some nice things to say about him, especially some Black men who had dealings with his company.

We headed to Su Casa to share a fajita and margaritas; since they were $5 instead of $8, we each had two.

Saturday, May 7

I did a little shopping after my hair for gift cards for Claude and Janice's Birthdays that we'll be celebrating tomorrow.   After a little rest, the time went quickly until Peter picked me up for Alfred's Birthday party at the Bavarian Beer Haus.  Alfred reserved a section for his guests, which must have been at least 50, with beverages and food off the menu, finishing off with Birthday cake.

This party made me rethink my plans for celebrating my 90th, instead of a catered party at SRS.

Sunday, May 8

It was too cold to be outside for our Mother's Day/Birthday event at the Dorns'.  I mentioned my plans for a Birthday dinner and it seemed very agreeable.  Colin suggested Victor's; Jay added the family room at Bonobo's as possible venues.  Laura thought music would be nice.

As usual, the men prepared our meal: Claude brought appetizers and beer, Jay made a salad, Brad provided hamburgers.  We finished the meal with Birthday cake from Cosco.

I got a breathtakingly beautiful orchid from Jay and Laura,

a very nice begonia from Claude,

and a Fresh Thyme gift card from Brad and Janice.

Monday, May 9

It was wonderful to sit with our friends Chuck and Bonnie Zahnow at the MARTA luncheon at the Hampton Inn in West Allis.  It was very well attended, and the food was delicious.  Many people commented about the meals that were served, which confirmed my plan to have my party at the Hampton Inn.

Because I really blew my diet this weekend, I finished off the day with wine at the SRS Happy Hour.

Warehouse MKE

 Tuesday, May 3, 2022

I took my car for major service yesterday, and I was without a car.  I could not attend Book Club, so I went to the Warehouse MKE with SRS.  It is a lovely gallery with the current show Secret Garden, with art work incorporating plants and gardens using various media.  It is free with ample parking.

My car was still not finished, so Peter picked me up for Donna Kuehl's funeral.  It was very well attended.

May Day

 May 1, 2022

Joanne Seidita crowned the Blessed Virgin at the 10:30 mass.

I put out my Blessed Virgin on my shelf.  The Madonna was a wedding gift from dear friends Ethel and John Bach; the rosary was a gift from Brad and Janice a number of years ago.

Rainy April

 Saturday, April 30, 2022

It rained all day, sometimes very hard.  I had to get off the freeway on my way home from my hair and shopping because visibility was so bad.  I got off on 60th St. and took city streets home.

Peter and I went to Fruhlingsfest at the Schwabenhof that supports German Immersion Schools.  I got the notice from Clara Fairfax.

In spite of a very rainy night, the attendance was fairly good.  With singers and dancing, it was a pleasant evening.
