Pot Luck

 Monday, May 23, 2022

I got a lot of feedback and possible solutions to my Potluck post yesterday.

Our Sunday Pot Luck suppers have become very popular and a great way to fill the void when we don’t have meal service.  The colors, aromas and taste of all the different foods combine to make an appealing plate.  And there is plenty of food; too much to have to balance on your lap.

The Club Room is ideal for gathering at presentations like poetry readings with finger food afterward.  But it has its limitations for a Pot Luck.  Even with combining all the tables, there are just so many that can sit at the table.  Others have to sit on the couch and/or arm chairs to balance their food and beverage.

Could we consider moving the Pot Luck to the Dining Room with service in the Trattoria?  Or perhaps, just the Dining Room?  Let’s think about this before the next Pot Luck.

Sounds like a good idea to me. Last month was my first one, and I recall being told that the reason it was upstairs is that there was a more complete kitchen. We might need a rotating "potluck committee" to ferry the necessary supplies downstairs. And maybe we would have to request that more of us bring our own dinnerware. Sounds like something to discuss with Abby at the next "Enjoy Life" meeting.

I have another request: Let's all label our food, saying what it is, and what the ingredients are. For example, does it contain meat (vegetarians care) or dairy &/or eggs (for vegans) or allergens (e.g. gluten, nuts, soy.

Marilyn and I talked about this issue last week and the two of us looked at both dining area and Cannoli Room.

Dining area has fewer accessible outlets and less serving table space; also no storage space for our dishes and such.

Cannoli Room has cabinets for storage of our stuff. I prefer the long buffet cabinet; Marilyn preferred the smaller cupboard under the sink. Not sure that cupboard is big enough for all our stuff. Cannoli Room also has both a sink and a small fridge.

Both cabinets are currently filled with SRS stuff right now. Fridge has some staff food in it; some pretty old!!!

The two of us met with Maggie and asked about using the Cannoli Room. She will ask Abby on Monday. Abby would need to consolidate the various decorations.

Hopefully, we can have a solution soon.

Here’s what Lenore Lee said:

My issue is that it is very crowded at the potlucks. At the last event several relatives & friends attended making for a rather large crowd.

It was difficult to find a comfortable spot to eat with a table. The chairs are very large, taking up space.

I would rather go to the cannoli room or the trattoria.

Dwight Morgan added:

For what it is worth my 2 cents is not to make life more complicated. Couldn’t attendees bring their own service and then sinks are not an issue. Seems to me comfortable/available seating is the issues that is trying to be addressed.

It would be great if supplies could be moved downstairs before Memorial Day cookout; if weather cooperates, outdoors; if not, then in Cannoli Room.

The dining room would be ideal. Much nicer than the Cannoli room as some have suggested. We'd have to ask for permission of course.

1) adding tables and chairs in Club Room would make it difficult to have space for people who use wheelchairs, scooters, and walkers to navigate safely;

 2) Tyler has confirmed that using sink in dining room is not doable; Morrison policy;

3) Abby and Tyler are fine with using Cannoli Room, and storing our items down there; they are looking at best storage options and will let us know what is doable.

Marilyn and I talked about this issue (That Marcia raised) last week and the two of us looked at both dining area and Cannoli Room.

Dining area has fewer accessible outlets and less serving table space; also no storage space for our dishes and such. (Also very tiny Sink).

M.Z. Let’s see what the final decision will be.
